Machinist Hammer
Western University offers engineering students the ability to get hands on experience with common manufacturing techniques. This optional session guides students through the construction of a machinist hammer from the stock material to the finished product
Take Aways
Using engineering drawings, students go through the process of cutting down material stock to size and learn the techniques required to perform different operations, but also the skill and time that precision entails. As an engineering student rarely is what I have design manufactured professionally, this course provides a valuable insight into the costs involved when manufacturing prototypes. While classes stress the importance of not designing more precision than required, Hands on experience trying to achieve even just one thousand of an inch precision is a difficult lesson to forget.
This experience allows me to better design components for prototyping, as well as ensuring minimal final product costs.
